ADAPTATION AND REGIONAL STANDARDIZATION OF METHODOLOGY FOR EVALUATING EFFECTS ON NON-TARGET ORGANISM
National legislation for commercial release of genetically modified (GM) plants is gradually fine-tuned through incorporation of recent international requirements on GM bio-safety such as The Cartagena Protocol on Bio-safety (CPB) of Living Modified Organisms, the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS). In this subproject, we propose to adapt current protocols and methodologies for evaluating non-target effects of GM crops (i.e., cotton, maize and potato) in Brazil and explore opportunities for regional standardization. More specifically, GMO ERA Project guidelines will serve as an initial model to modify Brazilian and regional legislation, while alternative methodologies may be employed during the course of the project. The proposed research should help strengthen both national and regional capacity for assessing and manage potential risks of GM crops release in commercial scale.
